I saw Barry Lyndon on a plane travelling from Brisbane to Vancouver, and to my surprise I remember enjoying it. Maybe it was the circumstances - being able to play and pause of my choosing, having some inflight-drinks to enjoy, and basically looking for any distraction from a 14 hour flight, but it worked for me. I could see myself - well, not hating it, but getting a little tired and bored in a cinema.

But I think Full Metal Jacket or Dr. Strangelove are far better Kubrick films. Things actually happen.

My partner and I have started a ritual called Dinner vs Movie for basically this reason! We like all the same tv, many of the same books etc but we’ve always had different taste in film. So once a week one of us chooses a movie and the other chooses dinner and then we swap the next week. It means we’re both watching stuff that’s not “our thing” and sometimes we end up loving it and sometimes…very much not.
